How to Get the Most Out of Your Prosthetic

Mark Daniel U. LAYGO • March 8, 2017

Very few life changes can compare to what one goes through when adjusting to a new limb. Aside from the physical accommodations, people with prosthetics have to overcome huge mental hurdles in order to live their lives to the fullest. While it takes a good deal of time to get used to this alteration, there are a few things that should be dealt with at the outset to help you get the most out of your new prosthetic.

Appropriate Fit

People often worry too much about the extremities at the end of a new limb, when the most important part might be the fit of the prosthetic in the socket. This is where your body will have to do the most adjusting as it adopts and adapts to this new appendage. The proper fit will affect such things as:

  • Movement within the socket
  • Control of the limb
  • Coordination

Proper Alignment

In addition to being properly connected to your body, a prosthetic has to be aligned correctly within its own structure. A good prosthetist can ensure your mechanism is aligned as it should be.

When these issues are taken care of in the right way, living with a prosthetic limb can be entirely manageable. To learn more about prostheses, call Huse Artificial Limb & Brace in Hollywood, Florida.
